What Is Google Analytics 4 (GA4)? A Beginner's Guide
GA4 is Google's analytics tool that records every interaction as an event. Learn about key events, which reports to check and how Google Tag Manager fits.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's free analytics service for measuring how people find and use your website or app. Unlike the older version, GA4 records every interaction as an event, including each time someone opens a page.
With GA4 you can see where visitors come from, which pages they read and how many end up getting in touch or buying. This guide covers the core ideas in plain language.
Key points
- GA4 records every interaction as an event, page views included.
- Important actions, like form submissions or purchases, are marked as key events.
- Focus on traffic sources, top pages and key events, not just visitor numbers.
- Google Tag Manager makes tracking code easier to manage without editing your site.
Events, Not Just Pageviews
In Universal Analytics, the older version of Google Analytics, the main unit was the pageview. In GA4, a page view is just one event type, called page_view. Some events, such as scrolls, outbound link clicks and file downloads, can be collected automatically, while others, like WhatsApp button clicks, can be added as needed.
Each event can carry parameters, which are extra details such as the page title, product name or transaction value.
Key Events: The Actions That Matter Most
Not all events are equally important. Actions that matter to your business, such as sending a quote request, clicking a WhatsApp button or completing a purchase, can be marked as key events in GA4's settings. GA4 used to call these conversions.
Once key events are set up, reports show which traffic sources and pages drive those actions. Keep the list short and meaningful.
Reports a Business Owner Should Check
You do not need to open every menu in GA4. Look at trends from week to week or month to month rather than a single day. These reports are enough for a regular check.
- Traffic acquisition: where visitors come from, such as organic search, ads, social media or direct visits.
- Pages and screens: which pages get the most views.
- Key events by traffic source: which channels actually bring inquiries or sales.
- Engagement rate: the share of sessions, or visits, where people engaged instead of leaving at once.
- Devices and location: phone or computer, and which cities visitors come from.
Where Google Tag Manager Fits
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free Google tool for managing tags, the snippets of tracking code such as GA4, the Meta Pixel or the TikTok Pixel. You install one GTM container on your site, then manage other tags from GTM without touching the site's code each time.
In GTM, a tag defines what data is sent and a trigger defines when, for example when someone clicks the WhatsApp button. Preview mode lets you test everything before publishing.

Frequently asked questions
Is GA4 the same as Google Search Console?
No. Google Search Console shows how your site performs in Google search results, such as search queries and clicks. GA4 shows what visitors do once they reach your site. The two can be linked so their data complements each other.
Why do GA4 numbers differ from my ad dashboard?
Each platform counts differently, for example in how it decides which ad gets credit for a sale or handles visitors who decline cookies. Ad blockers can also block some data. Some gap is normal, so compare trends rather than exact figures.
Do I need Google Tag Manager to use GA4?
No. GA4 can be installed directly with the Google tag. Google Tag Manager simply makes it easier to add events and other tools, such as the Meta Pixel, without editing your site's code each time.
